What This Tool Does

Reduce image file sizes by 50% to 80% without visible quality loss. The compressor supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, and GIF, and runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API and modern codec libraries — your photos never leave your device. A quality slider (1 to 100) lets you trade clarity for size; values between 75 and 85 are the sweet spot for photographs, while 85 to 95 is appropriate for screenshots, charts, and graphics with text. You can drop in up to 50 files at once and download the compressed batch as a single ZIP. The original files are untouched.

When to Use This Tool

Compress before uploading to a website, attaching to an email with a 25MB cap, or publishing to a CMS that imposes per-image limits. JPEG and WebP both use lossy compression and respond well to quality reduction. PNGs containing photographs also benefit from being converted to JPEG or WebP at the same time. Lossless graphics, logos with sharp edges, or screenshots with text are better served by the dedicated Lossless Optimize tool — quality loss is visible faster on hard edges than on photographs.

How to Use

  1. 1

Drop your images into the upload area

Drag and drop one or many image files, or click the upload area to browse. Files of any supported format can be mixed in the same batch.

  2. 2

    Choose a quality value

Use the quality slider. Start at 80 for photographs, 90 for screenshots and UI captures. Lower values produce smaller files at the cost of visible artefacts in smooth gradients.

  3. 3

    Preview file-size savings

Each file shows the original size, the compressed size, and the percentage saved. Re-run with a different quality if a particular image is over- or under-compressed.

  4. 4

    Download the result

Save individual compressed images, or click 'Download all as ZIP' to get the entire batch in one archive. Originals are never modified.

Privacy First — No Uploads

Your images are processed entirely in your browser. They are never uploaded to any server. Once you close the tab, all data is gone. No tracking, no storage, no cookies for your files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this image compressor really free?

Yes. theimgapp is 100% free with no daily limits, no signup required, and no watermarks added to your images.

Are my images safe?

Your images are processed entirely in your browser. They are never uploaded to any server. Once you close the tab, the data is gone.

What file formats are supported?

The compressor supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, and GIF formats.

How much can I reduce file size?

Typical results for photos range from 50-80% file size reduction at quality 80. PNGs with flat colors can see reductions exceeding 90%.

Should I use lossy or lossless compression?

Use lossy (this tool) for photographs and detail-rich images where small visual changes are imperceptible. Use the Lossless Optimize tool for logos, screenshots, and any graphic where pixel-perfect output matters.

Does compression affect EXIF metadata?

By default the compressor preserves EXIF data. To strip GPS, camera info, or other metadata, run the dedicated Metadata tool after compression.

Pro Tips

  • For web use, convert to WebP or AVIF instead of JPEG for the same quality at 25% to 50% smaller file size.
  • Resize before you compress. A 4000px image compressed at quality 80 is still many times larger than a 1200px image at the same quality.
  • If you need to hit a specific file-size cap (e.g. 1MB for an upload form), use the Target File Size tool instead — it binary-searches for the right quality automatically.
  • EXIF metadata adds a few KB to each file. If privacy or size matters, run the Metadata tool with the strip option after compression.
