Watermark images you publish publicly when you want to discourage casual reuse — client preview galleries, stock-marketplace previews, listing photos, and proof-of-authorship samples. Watermarks are a deterrent, not protection: a determined editor can always remove a watermark with content-aware fill or crop. For genuine intellectual-property protection, register copyright in your jurisdiction. For internal-only photos or final delivered files, watermarks usually do more harm than good.

Yes if it's high-contrast and 30%+ opacity. Very faint watermarks (under 20% opacity) often disappear into JPEG artefacts after Instagram or Twitter re-encodes the upload.
A determined user with Photoshop's content-aware fill or AI inpainting tools can remove most watermarks. They are a deterrent against casual reuse, not foolproof protection.
JPEG re-encoding does add a small amount of compression artefact. Set output quality to 95+ if quality is critical, or output to PNG for lossless watermarking.
